Region: Region 2--West Central.
Dominant Setting: mountain, forest, river/stream.
Location: 40 miles west of Missoula, take I-90 to Exit 61, southwest for 1 mile.
Manager: Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

This site is open year-round.
Pets are allowed (on leash).

Route name: Tarkio boat ramp.
Access route surface: gravel.
Access route dimensions: maximum running slope of 6%, maximum cross slope of 5%.

1: Picture 1--Main road to coming down to river and boat ramp area.
2: Picture 2--Boat ramp made of large concrete blocks. Often during high water, the gravel gets eroded out from between the blocks and becomes quite difficult to walk on until new gravel gets added back into place.
3: Picture 3--This is a 10-minute loading/unloading area adjacent to the ramp. There is a 6% slope, 5% cross slope to the ramp.
4: Picture 4--This latrine is located .2 of a mile away in the first parking area above the ramp.

This is the main take-out for the Alberton Gorge. (see Cyr Bridge FAS listing for main put-in). The Tarkio FAS site does not meet any accessibility standards, however, if you are seeking this experience, be sure to have your own assistance/support crew with you.
The Tarkio FAS site is also a great put-in site for an easier float down to the Forest Grove FAS.
