Sheepshead Recreation Area - Freedom Point.

General information.

Region: Region 3--Southwest.
Dominant Setting: mountain, forest, lake.
Location: From Butte travel north on I-15 for 8 miles. Take the Elk Park exit, then drive west 8 miles on Forest Road 442.
Manager: USDA Forest Service.
Amenities: pit toilets, drinkable water.
Pets are allowed (on leash).

Site name: Maney Lake Fishing platform.
Type of site: lake.
Accessible access to water: Fishing platform.
Other features: none.
Comment: This fishing platform is no longer useable. This is being shown only for those who have been there in the past and maybe used it. Contact the Ranger Station for more information regarding the condition of some of the facilities.

 Accessible hiking information.

Trail name: Trail system.
Type of trail: loop trail, destination trail (Some of the trail system takes a person out to Maney Lake. It also connects with the main part of the Sheepshead Recreation Area.).
Trail surface: paved, surface is firm, surface is stable.
Trail dimensions: minimum clear tread width of 48 inches, maximum running slope of 8.5 degrees, maximum cross slope of 2.5 degrees, there are tread obstacles, maximum tread obstacle height is 3 inches.
Length: 1 to 3 miles.
Other trail features: benches, some benches have back support, boardwalks and/or bridges.
Comment: The highest obstacle noted was where the trail butted up to one of the foot bridges.

Site name: Group picnic shelter.
Estimated number of accessible picnic tables: 1.
Picnic table information: movable picnic tables, picnic tables have wheelchair seating spaces.
Other features: BBQ with a non-accessible cooking surface height (surface is not within 15 to 34 inches from the ground), sheltered area, group event facilities.
Comment: Real nice shelter.

Site name: Freedom Point Recreation Area..
There is a good chance of seeing: waterfowl, birds, small mammals.
Comment: This whole area provides opportunities to see just about anything depending on the time of year.

Location pictures.

1: Picture 1--Entry road to Freedom Point.

2: Picture 2--Really nice picnic shelter. Paved trail system within the recreation area.

3: Picture 3--Large cooking grill inside picnic shelter. It does not meet accessibility standards.

4: Picture 4--Unique table design with grill on the end. Some of the tables did have cut away benches for wheel-chair seating.

5: Picture 5--Extensive trail system throughout the recreation area. For the trail leading to Maney Lake, the spot checking for slope revealed a max slope of 8.5%.

6: Picture 6--Paved trail system all the way to Maney Lake.

7: Picture 7--Fishing platform that is in desperate need of repair/replacement.

This is a perfect place for groups. There is a pavilion available at the picnic area that can accomodate up to 75 people.
